OEM: Original Equipment Manufacturer
What it means in practice: You own the product design. You provide the factory with detailed specifications ÔÇö engineering drawings, material specifications, tolerances, packaging requirements, and performance criteria. The factory's job is to manufacture to your specification. They contribute production capability, not design input.
What you need to bring: A complete or near-complete product specification. For a physical product, this means CAD files or technical drawings with dimensions and tolerances, a bill of materials specifying exact materials and grades, packaging specifications including box dimensions, insert design, and print files, and compliance requirements for your target market ÔÇö CE marking, EU safety directives, REACH compliance for chemicals, or food contact material regulations for anything touching food.
If you are developing a formulated product ÔÇö cosmetics, supplements, cleaning products ÔÇö OEM means you provide the formulation. The factory manufactures to your formula with your specified ingredients at your specified concentrations. They do not modify the formulation without your approval.
What it costs: OEM carries higher upfront costs than ODM because you are paying for exclusivity and specification control.
Tooling and moulds are the largest upfront cost for any product requiring custom injection moulding, die-casting, or stamping. Timeline: From initial specification to first production shipment, full OEM typically takes four to eight months. That includes sample development and approval (six to twelve weeks), tooling manufacture (four to eight weeks for injection moulds), pilot production run (two to four weeks), quality inspection and approval (one to two weeks), and production and shipping (four to eight weeks depending on order size and shipping method).
The advantage: Exclusivity. If you invest in OEM, the product specification is yours. No other buyer gets the same product from that factory unless they independently develop an identical specification ÔÇö which, for a tooled product, is economically impractical. Your intellectual property sits in the design, and a properly structured manufacturing agreement protects it.
The risk: You are the product designer. If the specification is wrong ÔÇö the material is not durable enough, the dimensions do not work, the packaging does not protect the product during shipping ÔÇö those are your mistakes to fix, at your cost. OEM requires genuine product development expertise or access to it.
ODM: Original Design Manufacturer
What it means in practice: The factory already has a product. They designed it, they engineered it, they hold the tooling, and they are already manufacturing it ÔÇö potentially for multiple brands. Your job is to select the product, apply your branding, and optionally request modifications within the factory's existing design framework.
What you need to bring: A brand identity ÔÇö your logo, your packaging design, your colour palette ÔÇö and a clear understanding of what modifications you want. ODM does not require engineering drawings or material specifications. The factory provides those because the product already exists.
The level of customisation available under ODM varies by factory and product category. At the basic level, you get logo placement and packaging design ÔÇö your brand on an existing product in existing colours. One step up, you can typically change colours, finishes, and surface treatments. Further up, some ODM factories allow material substitutions, minor dimensional changes, or the addition of accessories. Beyond that, you are effectively moving into OEM territory and the factory will price accordingly.
What it costs: ODM is significantly cheaper to start than OEM because you are not paying for tooling or product development. The factory amortised those costs across their existing order book. Your cost is essentially the unit manufacturing cost plus the factory's margin, plus any customisation charges.
Logo and packaging customisation typically adds Ôé¼0.10 to Ôé¼0.50 per unit on top of the base product cost for simple logo application ÔÇö pad printing, silk screening, or label application. The advantage: Speed and capital efficiency. Your target launch is within three months.
This describes the majority of Irish brands entering a new product category for the first time. A Dublin skincare brand launching a jade roller. The hybrid approach that works for most Irish SMEs: Start with ODM. Protecting your brand in either model
Whether you go OEM or ODM, three legal protections are non-negotiable when manufacturing in China.

If someone else registers your brand name in China before you do, they own it in that jurisdiction ÔÇö and your factory is legally obligated to respect that registration, not yours. How to find the right factory for either model
The process for identifying ODM and OEM factories is different, and most Irish importers conflate them.
For ODM, the factory selection is product-first. You are looking for a factory that already makes a product you want to sell. Start with product-level search ÔÇö on Alibaba for initial research, at Canton Fair for hands-on product evaluation, or through a sourcing agent who can visit factory showrooms in the relevant manufacturing cluster. Evaluate the existing product on quality, finish, and compliance. Request samples from three to five factories making comparable products. Compare.
For OEM, the factory selection is capability-first. You need a factory with the machinery, materials expertise, and quality systems to manufacture to your specification. You need to verify production equipment matches your process requirements, the factory has experience with your material types, quality management systems are in place, and production capacity can accommodate your order volume without your order sitting at the bottom of a queue behind larger clients.

Where to start
